Strengthening Bird Knowledge in Latin America: Strategic Alliances with Birds of the World
By: Fernando Medrano & Laura Kammermeier
At Birds of the World, we are convinced that unity is strength. Therefore, in recent years, we have forged alliances with various ornithological organizations in Latin America to enhance our collective efforts to conserve birds. These collaborations represent a significant step towards disseminating knowledge about birds in the Neotropics.

These alliances have allowed us to open free access to users entering from Bolivia, Panama, Argentina, Uruguay, the Caribbean, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. Additionally, thanks to collaborative work with organizations from these countries, Birds of the World has been launched in Spanish in October 2024. Furthermore, these organizations contribute scientific content and media to the platform, thus harnessing regional expertise and giving it a stable and broadly available platform.
Currently, our alliance includes the following partners:
- Bolivia: Asociación Civil Armonía
- Panama: Audubon Panama
- Argentina: Aves Argentinas
- Uruguay: Aves Uruguay
- Caribbean Countries: BirdsCaribbean
- Peru: Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad
- Mexico: Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas, Museo de Zoología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, CICESE, Sociedad para el Estudio y Conservación de las Aves en México A.C. (CIPAMEX)
- Colombia: Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt, Sociedad Ornitológica de Córdoba
- Chile: Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile, Fundación Ñañkulafkén, Oikonos
- Brazil: Sociedade para a Conservação das Aves do Brasil
- Venezuela: Unión Venezolana de Ornitólogos
- Ecuador: Universidad de San Francisco de Quito
- Nicaragua: Club Thamnophilus
If your organization is interested in being part of this alliance, we invite you to explore the opportunities with us. These Alliances will strengthen all our efforts to understand and conserve birds.

The Coastal Solutions Fellows Program builds and supports an international community to design and implement solutions that address coastal challenges across the Pacific Americas Flyway. Our main goal is to conserve coastal habitats and shorebird populations by building the knowledge, resources, and skills of Latin American professionals, and by fostering collaborations among multiple disciplines and sectors.
